Sigirya
Sigiriya Lion Rock, also known as Sinhagiri, is a majestic ancient rock fortress in Sri Lanka. It proudly holds a history of more than 1000 years with all the features to known as 8th Wonder of the world
Dramatic Rock Formation
The most striking feature is the massive, 600-foot tall rock plateau that dominates the surrounding landscape. This rock is believed to be an ancient volcanic plug.
Royal Palace
King Kashyapa (477-495 AD) chose this dramatic location to build his palace fortress in the 5th century. He decorated the rock walls with colorful frescoes and built an impressive palace on the summit, accessible only through a gateway carved to resemble a giant lion. Sadly, the lion's head has crumbled over time, but the paws are still visible today.
Artistic Marvels:
The remaining frescoes on the rock face are breathtaking. They depict beautiful women, some believe to be celestial maidens or royalty, adorned with jewels and colorful garments. These vibrant paintings offer a glimpse into the artistic styles and cultural aspects of Sri Lanka during that era.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. It's a popular tourist destination, offering a unique blend of history, archaeology, and stunning natural beauty.
